THE FIFTH SYMPOSIUM OF IRISH STUDIES IN SOUTH AMERICA : Ireland on the Screen, Stage and Page

The Federal University of Paraná, the Brazilian Association of Irish Studies (ABEI) and the W.B.Yeats Chair of Irish Studies of the University of São Paulo are organising a Symposium of Irish Studies which, since 2006, has gathered specialists from various associations such as IASIL, SILAS, ACIS, CAIS, EFACIS, AEDEI, BAIS.
The Fifth Symposium of Irish Studies in South America has the support of the Embassy of Ireland in Brazil. The theme, “Ireland on the Screen, Stage and Page” will include the following topics:
• Film
• Radio and TV
• Photography
• Theatre and Drama
• Fiction and Poetry
• Translation of Irish authors
• Literary criticism
• History, Politics and Economy
•

The keynote speakers that have confirmed their participation in the Symposium are:
• Lance Pettitt (Metropolitan University, Leeds)
• Emer Nolan (National University of Ireland/Maynooth)
- Angus Mitchell (Historian and editor of The Amazon Journal of Roger Casement)
• Maureen Murphy (Hofstra University, New York)
• Luz Mar González Arias (University of Oviedo, Spain)
• Paulo Eduardo Carvalho (University of Porto, Portugal)
• Irish poet Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin
• Irish film-maker John T. Davies
- Irish poet Macdara Woods

Individual Papers of 20 minutes and panels of three or four participants are invited on the topics above. Proposals are welcomed across disciplines, from scholars of languages and literatures, geography, history, psychology, sociology, economy, politics and other fields. Send an abstract of 200 words by email to:

The venue will take place in the city of Curitiba, Paraná State, Brazil. If you wish to attend the symposium without presenting a paper, please register by 10 August 2010.
